Des Plaines & Mount Prospect: Area Guide
Des Plaines and Mount Prospect are neighboring northwest suburbs just north of O'Hare, each with a downtown Metra station on the Union Pacific Northwest Line and a wide range of homes, from condos to single-family houses.
Des Plaines
Des Plaines, just north of O'Hare, is named for the Des Plaines River that runs through it. Its downtown has a Metra station, and Lake Park with Lake Opeka and Rivers Casino are among its landmarks. Homes range from condominiums and townhomes near downtown to single-family neighborhoods.
Mount Prospect
Mount Prospect is about 20 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and about 4 miles north of O'Hare, with a downtown Metra station and Randhurst Village for shopping. Prospect High School is in the village. Homes are mostly single-family houses, with townhomes and condominiums.
What buyers should know
- Near O'Hare: visit a home at different times of day to judge airplane noise.
- Near the river: parts of Des Plaines are close to the Des Plaines River; ask about flood zones and flood insurance.
- Schools and taxes: several school and park districts serve each town; check which ones serve a specific address.
