Skokie, Niles, Park Ridge & Morton Grove: Area Guide
Skokie, Niles, Park Ridge and Morton Grove are neighboring suburbs just past Chicago's northwest edge: established neighborhoods of bungalows, ranches and family homes, with Metra, the CTA Yellow Line and Pace connecting to the city.
Skokie
Skokie, about 15 miles north of the Loop, has its own CTA rail line, the Yellow Line, to Howard Street. Westfield Old Orchard, the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, the Skokie Northshore Sculpture Park and the North Shore Channel Trail are local landmarks. Housing includes many 1920s Chicago-style bungalows, two- and three-flats, later single-family homes and condo buildings.
Niles
Niles borders Chicago's far northwest side. It is known for the Leaning Tower of Niles, Golf Mill Shopping Center and the park district's Tam O'Shanter Golf Course, and it runs a free village bus. Homes are mostly single-family houses, townhomes and condominiums.
Park Ridge
Park Ridge, about 15 miles from downtown and next to O'Hare, has a walkable Uptown business district around the 1928 Art Deco Pickwick Theatre, plus two Metra stations. It is served by Maine South and Maine East high schools and Park Ridge-Niles School District 64. Homes are mostly single-family houses, with condominiums near Uptown.
Morton Grove
Morton Grove sits between Skokie and Niles, with a Metra station on the Milwaukee District North Line and Cook County forest preserves along both banks of the North Branch of the Chicago River. Harrer Park is its central park. Homes are mostly single-family houses.
What buyers should know
- Schools and taxes: school districts and property tax rates differ between, and even within, these suburbs; compare them for each home.
- Commuting: choose by your line: the Yellow Line in Skokie, Metra in Park Ridge and Morton Grove, Pace and the expressways in Niles.
- Older homes: many bungalows and post-war houses need updates; inspect carefully.
