West Ridge & Rogers Park: Area Guide
West Ridge and Rogers Park sit side by side on Chicago's far North Side, between the lake and the North Shore Channel: brick bungalows and two-flats in West Ridge, vintage lakefront buildings and Loyola University in Rogers Park.
West Ridge
West Ridge is one of the largest community areas on the North Side. Devon Avenue is its main commercial street, and areas such as Peterson Park, Arcadia Terrace and West Rogers Park each have their own character. The neighborhood is known for its brick Chicago bungalows: the Rogers Park Manor and Talman West Ridge bungalow historic districts together include more than 400 bungalows built in the 1920s. You will also find two-flats, courtyard buildings and condominium buildings.
Rogers Park
Rogers Park is Chicago's northernmost lakefront neighborhood. Much of its shoreline is public beach, and Loyola University Chicago's Lake Shore Campus sits in its southeast corner. Four Red Line stations and the Metra Rogers Park station make commuting easy, and the Glenwood Avenue Arts District and Jarvis Square are local hubs. Most homes for sale are condominiums in vintage courtyard and walk-up buildings, along with two-flats and some single-family homes.
What buyers should know
- Older homes: many houses here are about 100 years old; plan for a thorough inspection of the roof, masonry, electrical and plumbing.
- Condos: review the association's budget, reserves and assessments before you commit; see the FAQ.
- Two-flats: living in one unit and renting the other is a common way to buy here.
